Welcome to the Certificate in Climate Justice Leadership in Cooling. This course is designed to address one of the most urgent, yet often overlooked, challenges of the 21st century: the intersection of rising global heat, the growing demand for cooling, and deep social inequities. As the planet warms, cooling has shifted from being a matter of comfort to a fundamental human right and a requirement for survival.
The Core Challenge: The Climate-Cooling Paradox
At the heart of this course is the climate-cooling paradox: as the world gets hotter, we use more air conditioners that rely on fossil-fuel electricity and powerful greenhouse gases (HFCs), which in turn drive even more global heating. By 2050, the global stock of air conditioners is projected to grow from 1.6 billion to 5.6 billion units, meaning roughly 10 new units will be sold every second for the next 30 years. This course explores how to break this cycle by centering Climate Justice, a framework that views climate change as a human rights crisis and asks who is suffering most and who gets to decide the solutions.
What You Will Learn
This certification provides a comprehensive journey through the science, technology, and leadership required to achieve equitable cooling:
• The Science of Heat and Health: You will build scientific literacy regarding thermal comfort, the physiological impacts of heat, and the critical concept of wet-bulb temperature, which marks the limits of human survivability.
• Mapping Inequity: You will analyze why heat does not hit everyone equally, examining how historic practices like redlining and current cooling poverty leave low-income communities, outdoor workers, and marginalized groups at higher risk.
• Sustainable and Indigenous Solutions: The course highlights a toolkit of solutions ranging from passive design and cool roofs to Indigenous knowledge, such as the zero-energy Zeer pot and ancient architectural windcatchers.
• Policy and Governance: You will gain literacy in global frameworks like the Kigali Amendment and learn how to navigate National Cooling Action Plans (NCAPs) to push for systemic change.
• Leadership in Action: Finally, you will develop the capacity to lead through systems thinking, community co-design, and ethical storytelling, turning data and science into lasting justice for your community.
Why This Matters
Cooling justice is not a side issue; it touches at least six UN Sustainable Development Goals, including Health (SDG 3), Clean Energy (SDG 7), and Sustainable Cities (SDG 11). Without safe cooling, vaccines spoil, harvests rot, and children cannot learn. This course is your roadmap to becoming a leader who can bridge the gap between climate science and lived safety, ensuring that cooling protection reaches those most exposed to heat.
Module 1: Foundations of Climate Justice & Cooling
Purpose: Introduce learners to the intersection of climate change, extreme heat, cooling demand, and justice.
