Prof. Rose-Margaret Ekeng-Itua is a multi- award-winning Professor of Engineering with over 20 years of experience in Engineering and STEM Education cutting across the USA, Europe and Africa, leading the creation of innovative programs in STEM.
She is also a TED-Ed Author and her TED-Ed video has had over half a million views on YouTube and is featured on the blog of The Smithsonian Museum for African American History in Washington DC. Prof. Rose-Margaret as she is fondly called is also a TEDx Speaker with her TEDxTalk titled Unknown Unknowns helping to increase the visibility of African and Women Scientists and Engineers.
She is the Founder of Sabi Africa Network and African Technology and Innovation Institutes with the mission to create a new narrative for Africa as Pioneers in Science, Engineering, and Technology and create a thriving Afro-STEM R&D ecosystem.
Prof. Rose-Margaret is the first Black Woman to have earned a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Cybernetics in the world and she earned this from the University of Reading in the UK, with her first Ph.D supervisor Prof. Kevin Warwick who happens to be the first human Cyborg in the world.
Dr. Rose-Margaret also holds a Harvard University’s Certificate in Disruptive Strategies, a Master’s of Science Degree in Mobile and Satellite Communications Engineering from the University of Surrey in the UK, a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with Honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Federal University of Technology Owerri, Nigeria.
Prof. Rose-Margaret is a global thought leader recognized for her work in Engineering Education, Youth Workforce Development, and Advocacy for Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
In the USA only 0.01% of tenured electrical electronics engineering professors are black women, Rose-Margaret is one of these few black female tenured electrical/electronic professors in the USA and continues to stand strong opening up pathways in the field for many women, youth, and underserved communities.
Rose-Margaret is the first black female professor to have led her students to win the National Science Foundation (NSF-CC) national technology innovations completions in the USA. This earned her and her students an invitation to the USA White House and Congress to talk about their technology innovations.
She is one of the first professors in the USA and globally to create Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethics content this earned her recognition as top 100 women in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethics globally by the 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics in 2018.
She is the first black female professor globally to create a program in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4,0), earning her program the status of the first Center of Excellence in Industry 4.0 Technologies by Amatrol. The Industry 4,0 or Smart Manufacturing Program that she created has made her a known Television face in the news as she has been interviewed by ABC7 news, KRON4 News, and another KRON4 News to mention a few. Her Smart Manufacturing Technology Program has earned her recognition from Senators, Congressmen and Congress women in the USA and given her the alias of “The Queen of Industry 4.0 Education in the Silicon Valley”
In 2021, the Mayor the City of Fremont, California in recognition of Rose-Margaret’s outstanding work in Industry 4.0 Education appointed her as a Commissioner on the Economic Development Advisory Board of the City of Fremont, California making her the first Black person to hold this position. Rose-Margaret programs created pathways to employment for women and individuals from underserved communities in the City of Fremont which is the Manufacturing Hub of the Silicon Valley. Rose-Margaret still serves as a Commissioner.
In 2021, Prof. Rose-Margaret was also, appointed by the California State Senate’s Rules Committee to serve on the State-wide AB928 Implementation Committee because of her globally recognized expertise in STEM. She still serves as a Senate appointee and is the first and only person of the African Diaspora.
She is the Principal Investigator (PI) of a National Science Foundation Grant in Smart Manufacturing and Director of multiple grants focused on Engineering/Engineering Technology Workforce development, thus leading several industry-academia partnerships with companies like Tesla, NASA, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Google, Lam Research, Stanford Linear Accelerator Lab, Lawrence Livermore National Lab, and Genentech to mention a few.
Her work in creating diverse and equitable pathways into the Engineering & Technology workforce earned her an invitation by the Conference Center of Policy Resolution to co-create a national framework and blueprint for pathways to better jobs. The blueprint is being adopted nationally in the USA.
Her work in Cybernetics, Robotics, Industry 4.0, Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethics, Smart Microgrids, Smart and Sustainable Energy & Systems, User-Centred Design, Humanitarian Engineering, Equity in Engineering & Technology Education and Workforce Development are often cited as exemplar and best practice globally.
In 2020, in the thick of COVID-19 Pandemic with increased layoff in the leisure and hospitality industry, Rose-Margaret co-created program to support dislocated workers (especially women) get jobs in Industry 4.0/Advanced Manufacturing sector. The program was highly successful and in 2021, Rose-Margaret received a commendation certificate from the Alameda County, California Board of for her work in co-creating the ELF Program (Earn & Learn Fremont) that provided participants affected by COVID-19 layoffs the opportunity to jumpstart a new career in advanced manufacturing. Her program was also nominated for the East Bay Economic Development Alliance Awards under the Education Category in 2021.

She has also been recognized by the Institute of Electrical Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Radio and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for her work in engineering and youth technical skills development.

Her service to her community has sometimes meant that she be the first and only African Person or Women in the room, but she always remembers her FGGC Calabar Anthem and draws inspiration from that. She also draws strength and inspiration from God and from other Women role models that have gone before her like her mother and strives to be a role model that the next generation can draw inspiration from.
Rose-Margaret enjoys learning about various cultures through multicultural cuisine, art and travelling. She also enjoys amateur painting, art collection, listening to music, dancing, reading and most especially spending time with her husband, children, family and friends.
Rose-Margret values people and you catch her sometimes saying “Ubuntu”- which in Swahili means “I am because You Are”. She also often says “Owo Edi Iyene, Ofong Ikpupu, Okuk Ikpupu, Owo Edi Iyene”. Which in Efik language means – “People are Wealth, Clothes are Empty, Money is Empty, People are Wealth”. She strives to live by this and Love built on her Faith.
